The Cultural Loneliness Project

  • What is Cultural Loneliness

This type of loneliness deals with a loss of culture, by being removed from one’s culture via adoption and raised in an entirely different culture, and the adjustment one has to undergo to feel comfortable being the sole representation of one’s background on a multicultural space or campus.

  • Artifacts

The project will promote the idea that artifacts are more than cultural and historical objects but a continuation of a person’s culture and identity in the present. One thing I want to address is this connotation with artifacts being of the past, I want to challenge that by showcasing how it can still be something made in the present and that it is, by creation, an extension of someone’s history.

  • Why Share our Stories

I love the fact that the Black experience is so different, but still unifying. It brings me some solace that my experiences are relatable, but I find that my specific adopted identity isn’t always front and center in this community. By doing this project, I hope to expand other students’ perspectives on the struggles of adopted Black students, so that adopted students can feel like their experiences are finally being told. This project is to get an insight into the turmoil and beauty within adopted Black students’ minds!
